The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification is globally recognised and structured to provide a comprehensive progression from foundational accounting principles to advanced strategic leadership. In Malaysia, this pathway is highly regarded and often facilitated through institutions like Kolej Profesional MARA (KPM) and Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia (UPTM).
The qualification is divided into three primary levels, comprising a total of 13 exams, an ethics module, and a practical experience requirement.
1. Applied Knowledge Level
The Applied Knowledge level serves as the introductory stage, providing students with a broad understanding of essential accounting techniques and the role of the accountant in a business environment. It consists of three papers:
- Business and Technology (BT): Explores how businesses operate and the role of technology and management.
- Management Accounting (MA): Focuses on cost accounting, budgeting, and performance measurement.
- Financial Accounting (FA): Covers the fundamentals of double-entry bookkeeping and financial statement preparation.
Note: These exams are on-demand computer-based exams (CBEs), meaning they can be taken at any time during the year.
2. Applied Skills Level
The Applied Skills level builds upon the foundational knowledge and focuses on the core technical skills required of a professional accountant. This level is equivalent to a Bachelor's degree standard and consists of six papers:
- Corporate and Business Law (LW)
- Performance Management (PM)
- Taxation (TX)
- Financial Reporting (FR)
- Audit and Assurance (AA)
- Financial Management (FM)
Upon completion of this level and the Ethics and Professional Skills Module, students are awarded the Advanced Diploma in Accounting and Business.
3. Strategic Professional Level
The Strategic Professional level is the final stage, designed to develop leadership, strategic thinking, and advanced technical expertise. This level is equivalent to a Master's degree standard. It is divided into two parts:
Essentials (Compulsory)
- Strategic Business Leader (SBL): A multi-disciplinary case study testing leadership and strategic analysis.
- Strategic Business Reporting (SBR): Focuses on the application of accounting principles in a strategic context.
Options (Choose Two of Four)
- Advanced Financial Management (AFM)
- Advanced Performance Management (APM)
- Advanced Taxation (ATX)
- Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)
Additional Requirements for Membership
To become a fully qualified Chartered Certified Accountant, students must also complete the following:
- Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM): An online module that develops the ethical and professional qualities employers seek.
- Practical Experience Requirement (PER): A minimum of 36 months of relevant work experience and the achievement of specific performance objectives.
Pathways for Malaysian Students
For Malaysian students, particularly those under the MARA Young Talent Programme (YTP), a common pathway involves completing the Foundation in Accounting (AFIA) at a local college before progressing to the professional papers. As seen with high achievers like Mr. Muhammad Danish Irfan, completing final papers at an international institution such as Griffith College Cork provides a competitive advantage on the global stage.
If you are planning your ACCA journey, ensure you check for potential exemptions based on your previous academic qualifications, such as a Diploma or Degree in Accounting from a recognised Malaysian university.
