The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is one of the most recognised professional accounting qualifications in Malaysia. It provides students with a pathway to becoming a chartered accountant and is highly valued by employers in the financial sector, including the Big Four accounting firms.

What is the ACCA Qualification

ACCA is a global professional body that offers the Chartered Certified Accountant designation. The curriculum is designed to provide students with technical knowledge in accounting, finance, audit, and taxation, as well as essential business management and leadership skills. In Malaysia, ACCA members can apply for membership with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) after gaining three years of relevant work experience.

Entry Requirements for ACCA in Malaysia

There are several ways for Malaysian students to begin their ACCA journey depending on their current academic level.

Foundations in Accountancy (FIA)

Students who have completed SPM or IGCSE can start with the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) track. This is a preparatory program that leads to the ACCA Qualification. Upon completion of the Diploma in Accounting and Business under FIA, students can progress directly to the Applied Skills level of the ACCA.

Direct Entry for STPM and A-Level Students

Students with STPM, A-Levels, or a recognized Foundation in Business/Arts can register directly for the ACCA Qualification. You generally need at least two passes in STPM or A-Levels and three credits in SPM, including English and Mathematics.

Exemptions for Degree Holders

If you have already completed an accounting degree from a university recognized by ACCA, you may be eligible for exemptions. For example, graduates from many Malaysian public and private universities are often exempted from all nine papers of the Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills levels.

ACCA Course Structure

The ACCA qualification consists of 13 exams divided into three main levels. Students must also complete an Ethics and Professional Skills module and meet practical experience requirements.

Applied Knowledge

This level provides a broad introduction to the world of finance and develops your understanding of essential accounting techniques. The papers are:

  • Business and Technology (BT)
  • Management Accounting (MA)
  • Financial Accounting (FA)

Applied Skills

This level builds on existing knowledge and focuses on the application of technical skills required of a professional accountant. The papers are:

  • Corporate and Business Law (LW)
  • Performance Management (PM)
  • Taxation (TX)
  • Financial Reporting (FR)
  • Audit and Assurance (AA)
  • Financial Management (FM)

Strategic Professional

The final level prepares students for senior advisory or leadership roles. It consists of two essentials papers and a choice of two options.

  • Essentials: Strategic Business Leader (SBL) and Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)
  • Options: Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX), or Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

Study Options for Malaysian Students

Malaysian students have the flexibility to choose how they want to study for the ACCA exams. Many local private colleges are recognized as ACCA Approved Learning Partners (ALP), which ensures high teaching standards.

  • Full-time study: Ideal for school leavers who want to focus entirely on their exams.
  • Part-time study: Suitable for working professionals who wish to upgrade their qualifications while gaining work experience.
  • Online or Distance Learning: Provides flexibility for students who prefer to study at their own pace or live far from major cities like Kuala Lumpur or Penang.

Study Abroad Opportunities

While ACCA can be completed entirely in Malaysia, many students choose to pursue the qualification or a related degree abroad. Popular destinations for Malaysian students include the United Kingdom and Ireland, where many universities offer ACCA-embedded programs. Studying in Australia, New Zealand, or the United States also provides global exposure and networking opportunities in international financial hubs.

Career Opportunities for ACCA Graduates

An ACCA qualification opens doors to various roles across different industries. In Malaysia, ACCA graduates are sought after for roles such as:

  • Auditor
  • Tax Consultant
  • Financial Controller
  • Investment Analyst
  • Management Accountant
  • Business Consultant

The qualification is not limited to accounting firms. Many ACCA members work in multinational corporations, government agencies, and non-profit organisations, both locally and internationally.
